Holiday Safety at the Workplace

Holiday Safety at the Workplace

The holiday season is full of festivities! Christmas is the most decorative holiday of all year. When decorating your office, be sure to make safety your top priority and avoid any holidays mishaps. Here are some tips to follow when you’re preparing your office for the holiday.

Office Decoration

When planning to decorate the office with Christmas lighting, the Electrical Safety Foundation states that workers should:

  • Be sure that all lightening is certified and laboratory tested
  • Inspect all lights and cords for any damage
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many decorations that could lead to overheating and cause a fire
  • Never try to make a three-prong plug fit into a two-prong plug
  • Be sure to turn off all lightening indoors and outdoors when leaving
  • Never have electrical extensions in high traffic areas or running under rugs or carpet

Food Safety

The U.S. Department of Agriculture shares these safety tips with us when it comes to food safety:

  • Stay safe when hanging decorations and use a stepladder and not a chair! Never hang any decorations from sprinklers because they can prevent them from operating improperly. OSHA regulations state that stacked materials should never be closer than 18 inches below fire sprinklers.
  • Always wash your hands before and after handling any food
  • Always serve food on clean plates and never on plates that have handled raw meats previously
  • Ensure that any meats you’ve prepared have been cooked to the proper internal temperature
  • Remember to keep hot foods hot, and cold foods cold
  • Be mindful of those co-workers that have a food allergy!

Stay safe this holiday!
