Must Haves For Your Electrical Safety Kit

Must Haves For Your Electrical Safety Kit

Electricians are always at risk for the dangerous exposure to electricity. Electrical injuries due to shock, electrocution, fires and explosions can range from severe burns, blindness, hearing and memory loss from the pressure wave, broken bones and even death. Electrical safety standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are designed to protect electrical workers. At a jobsite, the most important consideration should be your and your employee’s safety. Here are some things to consider when preparing a safety kit.

Protective Gear

Because many electricians supply their own work clothes, it is important as an employer to provide gear worn on the job meets safety standards. A set of rubber insulating gloves, leather protective cover gloves and sleeves should be included in the kit. Safety overshoes or over boots is needed when electricians are working on ground exposed to hazardous step.

Circuit Tester

While on the job, you’ll need a voltage tester for electrical work. Always be sure to check it on a live source before relying on it. This ensures that the circuit you’ll be working with right after is absolutely dead.

Electrical Switchboard Matting

Switchboard matting is used to insulate and protect electrical workers from deadly shocks generated by high voltage equipment.

Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

The GFCI is an important safety tool. it’s a fast-acting circuit breaker designed to shut off electric power in the event of a ground fault within as little as 1/40 of a second.

When a tool or electrical system is properly grounded, current from a short or lightening follows the grounding path. This prevents the buildup of voltages that would otherwise result in shock, injury or even death.

The last must-have we’d like to mention, is the OSHA-complaint first aid kit. These kits come available in different sizes and contains over 50 first aid item to assist a wide variety of temporary injuries.
