Prevent Water Damage to your Wallet

The smallest amounts of water can cause major damage to your floors, walls, cabinets, etc. The damage can cost you well over thousands of dollars in damages to your home and business. Once you’ve discovered water damage, time is of the essence. A study by the Institute of Business & Home Safety states that the leading causes for closed water damage insurance claims are plumbing pipes and drain systems. The following are tips on how to prevent these damages to your property and wallet.

Preventing Plumbing Systems Failures

According to another study conducted by IBHS, plumbing systems failures are the type that cause most costs for homeowners. The average incident was more than $5,000 after the insurance deductible was paid. The majority of these claims were caused by preventable conditions such corroded, rusty, or frozen pipes. Major signs of a plumbing problems include:

-An increased water bill

-Banging pipes

-Rust stains

-Moisture in the walls or on the floor

-Signs of wet soil erosion near the foundation

Set the thermostat to at least 60 degrees in winter months, letting the faucets drip on usually cold days, and insulating pipes are all ways reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

Preventing Plumbing Drain Failures

The IBHS found that more that half of the plumbing drain system failures were the result of  sewer backups. The problem costs on average $4,000 per incident after the insurance deductibles was paid.

If your home’s sewer system in connected to the city’s, like most older homes, or if you’re located downhill, contact a professional to in stall backflow prevention in your sewer system. Be sure to plant trees away from lateral drain lines to prevent roots from damaging the pipes. Never pour grease down your drain.
